hard country
(jack sundrud / bruce miller)
there goes bobby ray junior
pullin' out of town
got his family in a u-haul
they're all sunbelt bound
another farm abandoned
they gave the land back to the wind
the price of fuel went up, corn went down
and i don't think we'll be seein' bobby again
it's a hard country
last year the fields were all too wet to plough
hard country
this year they say that it looks like a drought
but i can't leave
my roots go deep
in this hard country
i've got a friend, got a job in the city
installin' burglar alarms
he says he's makin' real good money
but i can tell he misses the farm
he calls to ask how the crops are doin'
i say we could use some rain
he says his life is movin' kinda fast
and i tell him out here
things are always the same
well the snow piles up in the winter
and the bugs come out in june
but somehow it's all worth it
when i see that harvest moon

father’s day
(jack sundrud / craig bickhardt / helen darling)
third sunday every june
i’m on the road back home
to celebrate the finest man i’ve ever known
i bought a tie he won’t wear
a silly card to make him laugh
and you can bet he’ll have a few new jokes
if i know my old man
i’m heading home for father’s day
to hear him tell it like it was
back when a man knew who to fight
and who to trust
the world made sense, he’ll say to me
in the good ol’ used to be
or at least it seemed that way
in my father’s day
one job for forty years
one house and one wife
the kind of thing you seldom see in modern life
oh, i love hearing his rose colored memories
i’ve heard ‘em all a hundred times
but there’s no place i’d rather be
i live my life so i can face him
every year when i embrace him
i thank him for showing me the way
third sunday every june
i’m on the road back home

humility
(jack sundrud / craig bickhardt)
no one likes to play the fool
i’ve been there myself a time or two
there’s no easy way out
and it takes what it takes
to get through these emotions
and it breaks when it breaks
i left my heart wide open
you lit a burnin’ flame
i never fell like that for no one
and my pride will never be the same
you left me standin’ in the fire
tasting the ashes of my shame
i hang my head, as shades of red
come washing over me
i've learned more than i want to know
about humility
we were the envy of everyone we knew
everybody said we were the most likely two
somewhere something went wrong
and it takes what it takes
to get through these emotions
and it breaks when it breaks

taste for life
(jack sundrud / craig bickhardt)
bitter tears of love's reminders
salt of sorrow on my tongue
but my cup shall not go empty
'til my taste for life is gone
oh the wine of tender kisses
how it lingers on and on
in my memory sweet as nectar
'til my taste for life is gone
long as there's a breath inside me
i will raise my glass up high
on your journey, may you never
ever lose your taste for life
i have thirsted for each moment
i have savored every one
i will drink of my tomorrows
'til my taste for life is gone

soul searchin'
(jack sundrud)
been takin' a long, hard look
back at the fool i've been
tryin' to get the pieces to fit the shape i'm in
the shape i'm in
i've been diggin' down deep, tryin' to understand
how two minus one adds up to only half a man
i'm only half a man
no matter how long it takes
i’m going to sort this thing out
girl, you cast a long shadow of a doubt
i've been soul searchin'
now once upon a time i was so confident
been tryin' to meditate
on just where that boy went
where that poor boy went
at times i'm so bitter, but love was so sweet
they're all mixed up together
way down deep
i've been soul searchin'
tryin' to find my way
soul searchin'
getting' stronger every day
i know there's a power greater than my own
i won't have to walk through this valley alone
i'll find my way
of this i am certain
all i need is faith
and a little soul searchin'

noonday sun
(jack sundrud / benny hester)
hear that whistle, hear that crack
hammerin’ spikes in a railroad track
ain’t got time to wipe my brow
gotta get through some way, somehow
boss says get it done
breakin’ my back in the noonday sun
i’m a number, got no name
wearin’ stripes and wearin’ chains
ain’t no water for my thirst
big and bad and gettin’ worse
they’ll shoot me if i try to run
let me bleed in the noonday sun
paying for the wrong i’ve done
never meant to hurt no one
slavin’ in the noonday sun
got twenty years, if i behave
sometimes i long for an early grave
if i die - bury me
back home ‘neath that willow tree
there i’ll be ‘til jesus comes
six feet down from the noonday sun

modern day blacksmith
(jack sundrud /sara light / danny arena)
he stands beneath a hickory tree
his mighty arms swingin’
sparks fly and sweat drips from his eyes
his steel hammer singin’
he holds a fire-red horseshoe up
the crowd begins to cheer
they just love a slice of life from yesteryear
and the tour guide says, follow me
there’s so much more for you to see
a woman at a spinning wheel
you can hear it hummin’
another works behind the loom
her harpist fingers strumming
weaving home spun memories
of a different time
before their jobs were taken by assembly lines
and the tour guide says
that’s the way it used to be
life was so much simpler then
once the wheels of progress pass you by
they don’t come ’round again
i pick up my old guitar and slowly start to pickin’
play a lick - get out my pen
and do a little scribblin’
a couple lines of words and rhymes
from deep down in my heart
they tap into the magic where the music starts
and the tour guide says, that’s how it used to be
in the days before we got it all for free
and that’s when i woke up
and started to wonder if
i’m the modern day blacksmith

by my own hand
(jack sundrud / randy handley)
i’ve got scars of battles, more than i can count
i’ve seen bad luck running when it won’t run out
i’ve had friends desert me
turn around - they’re gone
i’ve had love torn from me while i’m holding on
but what fate has put me through
can’t hold a candle to
the damage that’s been done
by my own hand
i denied my spirit, i ignored the truth
can’t believe the hell i put this body through
looking back on the road that i’ve traveled down
but for the grace of god, i’d be in the ground
there’s no use laying blame
it’s time to break these chains
‘cause the damage has been done
by my own hand
i know a man is not forgiven
while he shakes his fists at heaven
and so i pray
for those who’ve called me friend
and strength to rebuild again
the damage that’s been done
oh, the damage that’s been done
oh, the damage has been done
by my own hand

impossible blue
(jack sundrud / craig bickhardt)
if you could see me from behind the mirror
if you could be me it would all be clear
it’s hard to breathe in this atmosphere
and if you find me swimming through the haze
across a million miles of yesterdays
would you reach out would you walk away
i ask the falling sky
as the pieces tumble by
why is the color fading from your eyes
could there be a word worse than goodbye
my whole world has turned into
impossible blue
unguarded moments when i made you laugh
they shutter by me like old photographs
then wash away like tears in a bath
off into a lonely sea
deep blue in me

heartland train
(jack sundrud /randyhandley)
i remember my first ride
all aboard the 8:05
ran from dixie to moline
stopped about a hundred times between
safe between my ma and pa
i saw boomtown america
sailing over waves of grain
goin’ the way of the heartland train
rollin’ on into the night
i counted every backwoods light
lonesome whistle singin’ sweet
the rhythm of the rails rocked me to sleep
i dreamed i’d be the engineer
steamin’ ‘cross a new frontier
boys will grow and dreams will fade
gone the way of the heartland train
oh, on an iron horse to glory i did ride
oh, when it felt like there was no end of the line
now the farms and old downtowns
are boarded up or all torn down
beaten by the winds of change
gone the way of the heartland train

living my dream
(jack sundrud)
i had a dream the other night
i was out front running lights for the beatles
they were back, john and george were alive
and somehow paul and i got to be friends
but when i tried telling my friends
about my gig... i cried
i woke up feelin’ kinda sad
i told sue ‘bout this dream i had
and she said, you oughta write a song
i looked around at all my stuff
i’ve always had more than enough
and it hit me, how much i owe those guys
‘cause since i heard "i want to hold your hand"
i’ve made my living
writing songs and playing in bands
i’m living my dream
i’m living my dream
i had a dream the other night
i was out front running lights for the beatles
